Lock your digital door – Prevent cybercriminals from getting inside
Do you lock the front door when you leave? Of course. That gives a sense of security. Digitally, it is actually no different, only we sometimes forget it there. And that while your computer, laptop or smartphone often contains much more valuable information than you think. Think of login details for your e-mail, bol.com, PayPal or even your bank. If they fall into the wrong hands, it can have major consequences.
What could happen?
A well-known example: criminals get hold of your bol.com login details. They place an order in your name, set the payment method to ‘pay later’ and have it delivered to a delivery point. You get the bill and the perpetrator is nowhere to be found.
It gets even more annoying when they get access to your email address. They can use that account to access many other services – and reset passwords, for example. Before you know it, you no longer have access to anything.
What can you do yourself?
Fortunately, there are a few important steps you can take now:
1. Use 2-factor authentication (2FA)
This means that you add an extra step to your password, for example a code via an authenticator app (such as Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator). This is more secure than SMS, because text messages can be intercepted.
This prevents hackers from simply logging in, even if they know your password.
2. Use strong and unique passwords.
Never use the same password for multiple accounts. And make your passwords long and hard to guess – think of a passphrase or a combination of words, numbers and symbols.
